CSIA recommends annual inspection, with sweeping and repair as needed. Describe the system’s history rather than relying only on how often you light a fire.
Will sweeping fix a chimney leak?+
Not by itself. Tell the provider where and when water appears so exterior components and other possible causes can be assessed under a separate scope.
Does cleaning the visible fireplace count as a full chimney sweep?+
CSIA distinguishes firebox cleaning from a complete sweep, which includes the flue and smoke chamber. Have the passages covered by the visit listed.
Can a cleaning log replace professional sweeping?+
CSIA says chemical products alone do not replace mechanical cleaning and inspection. Tell the provider what products have already been used.
What should a sweeping report record?+
Request the areas cleaned, deposits remaining, access limitations and any recommended inspection or repair. A cleaning invoice alone does not describe the whole system condition.
